On occasion of Affidabilità e Tecnologie 2013 - 7th edition, VE&D presents an innovative methodology in the reliability field, designed for companies that produce and design industrial products.
The deep changes occurred in the automotive sector in the last few years led to the coexistence of strategies still recently considered antithetical:
- “quickly and well”;
- continuous product innovation;
- product development time always shorter and shorter;
- cost reduction plans and reliability targets increasingly challenging;
- use of complex functional systems at the same time of drastic reduction of test plans.
Facing the new scenario, many historical methodologies became no longer adequate and need to be renewed: streamlined, speedily and cost efficiently operated, easily adaptable to new environment, able to give measurable outputs.
Modular Failure Analysis (MFA), developed by the senior manager of VE&D, is a new integrated approach to preventive and predictive technique to work out thorough plans to prove the achievement of reliability target of a new product.
MFA is composed of two section: the first is dedicated to the preventive reliability, the second to the predictive reliability. Both sections have a modular structure. Section 1 can be developed in an independent or integrated way compared to Section 2.
MFA in the Section 1 overtakes the FMEA criticality and aims to be a real alternative to the latter, applicable and customizable to the several phases of PDP ( Product Development Process ), saving time and resources. The main instrument is the Risk Matrix.
On the basis of the product and of its innovation level, the customer can choose between the Concept Analysis, Failure Analysis , Drawing Analysis or apply the combination of the three modules.
An other important theme for companies is know, most early as possible, what will be the effective behavior of the product compared to reliability targets asked at the beginning of the development process.
The method, studying a real case of development of an engine for commercial vehicles and developed in collaboration with Department of Mathematics at Politecnico di Torino, was presented in a dissertation for the Degree course in Mathematical Modelling In Engineering. The objectives of the method are: provide an alternative method to those commonly used for estimating the contribution of proactive activities to reduce the total test time of Reliability Growth plans, obtaining the results through the use of statistical methods:
- using the output of FMEA or MFA activities;
and enhance the benefits of the application of the method VE&D in comparison with other methods in terms of reduction of:
- total costs;
- times / mileage.
